THERE IS Y THERE ARE

Lección: Como y cuando se usa: there is, there are

En esta lección aprenderemos en que momento usar there is y there are, es fácil ya lo verás, las expreciones there is y there are nos habla de la existencia o no de las cosas, en español su significado es hay, la gran diferencia en inglés entre ambos es que there is es singular y there are es plural, se dan cuenta que es fácil.

La estructura es fácil, basta con conjugar el verbo “to be” (IS, ARE):

THERE + VERBO TO BE

Usos de there is

There is utilizamos con nombres contables en singular introducidos por los artículos indeterminados a/an o el número one , además podemos utilizar con nombres incontables.

There is a book on the table. (Nombre contable: book)
There is a lot of sugar in the tea. (Nombre incontable: sugar)

*Hay una forma abreviada de escribir y decir there is, que es there’s (pronunciación: «Ders»). Así como en negación se puede abreviar there is not a there isn't

There's a book on the table.

There isn't a tree.

Ejemplos:

There is afirmativo

• There is a pencil. (Hay un lápiz)
• There is one car. (Hay un coche)
• There is a radio. (Hay un radio)
• There is a door. (Hay una puerta)

There is negativo

Para formar frases negativas, basta añadir el NOT inmediatamente después del uso de la expresión.

There is not a dog, (No hay un perro). Pero podemos abreviar como: There isn't a dog.

• There isn't a cat black. (No hay un gato negro)
• There isn't a house. (No hay una casa)
• There isn't a window. (No hay una ventana)
• There isn't a bus. (No hay un bus)

There is interrogativo

La pregunta se hace colocando el verbo al principio de la frase, y la respuesta corta se hace repitiendo las mismas palabras en singular , positivo o negativo, según el caso.

A. Is there any food in the fridge?.(¿Hay algo de comida en la nevera?)

B. Yes, there's (Sí, lo hay)/ No, there isn't (Sí, lo hay).

A. Is there a drugstore near your school?. (¿Hay una farmacia cerca de tu escuela?)

B. Yes, there's (Sí, lo hay)/ No, there isn't (Sí, lo hay).

Usos de there are

There are se utiliza con nombres contables en plural.

There are computers. (Nombre contable: computer)

*De igual forma, there are también se puede abreviar al escribir y al hablar: there’re  (pronunciación: «Derá»). Así como en negación se puede abreviar there are not a there aren't

There're a lot of books on the table.

There aren't dinosaurs in the world.

Ejemplos:

There are afirmativo

• There are five pencils. (Hay cinco lápices)
• There are three cars parked outside the house. (Hay tres coches aparcados fuera de la casa)
• There are some children playing. (Hay algunos niños jugando)
• There are twenty children in the class. (Hay veinte niños en la clase).

There is negativo

Para formar frases negativas, basta añadir el NOT como ya mencionamos en algunos párrafos atrás.

There are not ten cats, (No hay diez gatos). Pero podemos abreviar como: There aren't a dog.

• There aren't cats black. (No hay gatos negros)
• There aren't houses. (No hay casas)
• There aren't windows. (No hay ventanas)
• There aren't buses. (No hay un buses)
